The car company now referred to as Audi initially started as a merger that occurred in 1932 between four Bavarian automakers: Horch, Audiwerke, DKW and Wanderer. This merger was known as the ‘Auto Union’. Later on, by the early 60s, Auto Union was acquired by Volkswagen and by 1969, Auto Union was merged with NSU Motorwerke to from Audi as we know it today. The four rings of the Audi logo represent the four original carmakers that merged to form the group most know today. Audi now represent a culture of modern technology and performance, which was not always the case. A little over ten years ago, Audi, produced a staggering amount of mediocre cars, but their successes in motorsports would soon change the image of the brand.
