About Cap d’Ail
Cap d’Ail – is a small green resort nestled just near Monaco. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful place on the entire French Riviera. Luxury villas, some modern and others built during the beautiful Belle Epoque, are hidden under pine trees. The town and its surroundings are considered a hiking paradise. A charming rock-cut path takes around an hour’s worth of walking with amazing views all the way. Note that during storms walks are not allowed.
Interestingly, the translation of the name Cap d’Ail is a Garlic Cape. The resort became popular in the 20th century. British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill loved coming here for holidays and was even made an honorary citizen of the town.
What to do in Cap d’Ail
While enjoying the magnificent beaches of Pissarelles, Mala and Marquet, we recommend visiting the “Chateau de Terrasses” park. It is located right at the entrance of Cap d’Ail. There are many exotic trees there, which were planted during the Belle Epoque.
From this park you can make your way to the other landmark – the Villa Chateau de Terrasses. It was built in 1896 by English banker William Mendel.
You should also see the building of the Eden Palace Hotel. The hotel was built in 1900 following the completion of the railway link between Nice via Monaco and Cap d’Ail. The hotel was intended for wealthy businessmen and aristocrats. It is located right next to the Mala beach.
Visit some of its historical villas… Villa the Camellias which today hosts the Cap d’Ail Museum. Villa Primavera whose architecture incorporates elements of Baroque and medieval Italian style. The Chateau Hermitage, which hosted Queen Victoria and Leopold II of Belgium.
