About Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and one of Europe’s largest historic cities with a rich cultural heritage. What to do in Amsterdam
Start discovering the city by visiting the “Koninklijk Paleis” or Royal Palace, the main architectural monument of the Dutch capital. It became a royal palace in 1808 by the order of Napoleon Bonaparte. Its rooms have Empire-style furniture and paintings by artists of the Rembrandt school, but its main attraction is the 17th-century marble sculptures by Artus Kvellin. The sculptures are allegorical and reflect the purpose of each room: Justice, Wisdom and Mercy.
Visit the oldest building of the city – The Old Church or Oude Kerk, it has preserved the atmosphere of the Middle Ages to this day. Inside, you will see images of ships, reminiscent of the fact that the church was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors.
The other famous landmark is The Western Church or Westerkerk. The bell tower of the church is the tallest and most beautiful in Amsterdam. A statue of Maximilian I, Emperor of the Roman Empire stands on the top of it. The church is also worth a visit because of the tomb of Rembrandt.
Amsterdam is a paradise for museum lovers as there are more than 50. One of the most important museums is the Van Gogh Museum. It has a collection of around 200 paintings and over 500 drawings donated to Amsterdam by Van Gogh’s nephew.
