 | | AFGHANISTAN – CREATION OF THE MALALAI LIBRARY – CHF 20’000.- Funds were allocated to the Association of Afghan Women and Children (EFA) to enable the completion of a library at the Malalai high school in Anawa, in the Panshjir province. The high school, completed in 2003, has already become an important centre for the region, thanks to its wide range of functions. It not only gives young women the opportunity to obtain their high school diploma, but also serves as an information centre for health, offers training to teachers and adults from all over the region, and provides a dare-care centre for the teachers’ children. The Malalai library will be a great first in the Panshjir province, especially since it is an integral part of the ambitious project of giving afghan women the means to have a true place in society. EFA (Enfants et Femmes Afghanes) is a Geneva based organisation that can be found at 14 Rue de l’Industrie. | | | | | | | ESTABLISHMENT OF THE REMA HOSPITAL IN BURUNDI – CHF 28’460.- An inspiring meeting with Maggy Barankitse convinced FOH that her cause was more than worthy of support. Maggy, the creator of the “Maisons Shalom” that have already housed over 10’000 orphans since 1993, has been dubbed the “angel of Burundi” and rewarded by a top United Nations’ honour for her work. Hoping to improve the situation, she initiated the project for the creation of a hospital in Nyamutobo in the Ruyigi province, which will open on January 22nd 2008. The hospital will attend pregnant women and children without means, victims of the civil war, and it will also accommodate an education centre. The funds granted will allow the hospital to have a chief gynaecologist in function during the first year. In these remote rural areas the situation is particularly precarious, as entire populations live in poverty and are left to fend for themselves without any real access to medical services. The clinics will aim to help especially nomad women, who register a very high death rate during their pregnancy, and are particularly vulnerable. A trip is organised each September to visit the monasteries and establish yearly reports. The appreciation for this project is constant and we are repeatedly requested not to abandon this work. The money raised during Elite’s 20th anniversary will allow the completion of the clinic at the Tsechu Monastery, at Nangchen Gar in the Quinghai Province. The clinic will benefit over 3000 people. FOH is dedicated to supporting concrete projects, which are culturally adapted, that answer real needs and have immediate effects.
